The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released new guidance documents regarding face coverings and how employers can assist employees wearing masks while performing strenuous activities. OSHA recommends that employers continue to encourage employees to wear cloth face coverings and offers guidance on prioritizing use, determining when to allow employees to remove coverings, identifying alternative options and more. Additionally, the guidance directly addresses heat illness prevention with suggestions including incorporating staggering breaks, encouraging the use of moisture-wicking masks, urging employees to remove coverings when wet, avoiding tasks during the hottest parts of the day and training workers on heat stress prevention.
